Cage Decor

Yesterday we made covers for the floors, rat hammocks, and a fleece climbing rope for the cage.

The cage was delivered today.  It was surprising very easy to put together.  Here are some pictures.....

the basics

So after doing a lot of reading and researching I decided to go with the HarlanTeklad Blocks for rats basic diet.  These blocks were designed for lab rats and the intent is to give the longest life possible with the most complete nutrition.  The little boys will start on 2018 (the last two numbers indicate percentage of protein) until they are 3-4 months old.  Then we will switch them to 2016 until about 8 months old.  At that point they will be on 2014 for the rest of the time.  This will help to keep their weight down as they get old, thus prolonging their lives.  There are several websites you can get the food from but the site that caught my eye was Everything Rats.  This store has just about everything you could want to order and I will be getting my food and many other things from here.  We've also ordered some a Hi Corner litter pan, Bene-bac tubes, special cage cleaner, an Eco Glass water bottle, and a travel carrier.
Once the rats are born (trying to hold out on some things), we will order some green mush (see the website for an explanation on that one), food, a wheel, hmmmmm.....anything else?  I'm sure there will be. :)  It's fun shopping for them. 
Our cage is due to arrive tomorrow.  It will be interesting getting it put together.  Hopefully it won't be too difficult.  I'll let you know.....
